Snapper carb troubles

I've got a Snapper 32" cut rear engine rider (can't read model number) that I'm guessing is about a mid-80's model. It has a 1989 B&S 12hp 1 cyl. I/C engine in it, but I don't think it's original. The problem is: When it is completely warmed up and I'm mowing, about every minute or so it will slow down severely, loose power, and sometimes I'll have to take it back down to idle and then get it back up to speed before I can go again. Sometimes, if I let it sit and run (high throttle) long enough it will recover on its own. This seems to happen more frequently the faster the engine is running, and it seems to do it almost every time I hit thick grass, and/or a steep hill. Any ideas on what the problem is? I suspect something carb related - should I just buy a new carb? I've tried to adjust on the mixture screw on the bottom of the bowl, but I don't think ir does any good. Thanks, Alex.

You can take old needle & put on new float BUT as I said before,if you change float, float needle or needle & seat you STILL have to check float level and possibly adj as needed, tang on float under needle is what sets level.

Should I put the old needle valve on the new float? You think that would fix it?

Well, today I took the carb off. I installed a different carb off of a 1979 B&S 11hp, but the carb itself is only a few years old. It ran good, but there were some air cleaner mounting issues; so I took that carb off and took the float, needle valve, bowl, and mixture screw assy. off of the new carb and put in the old carb - I also cleaned it out well with carb cleaner. Now, when it runs, it runs smooth, but only for a second or two, then just dies. Fuel is building up in the intake pretty bad, too. What's wrong?

Two possible causes to your flooding problem, float needle taper doesn't match seat in old carb, allowing gas to leak by needle or float level is set too high & gas filling bowl & flooding eng before it can shut off supply, anytime you change float needle or needle & seat you have to adj float level, due to possible mfg design change,or thickness of gasket on needle seat

The 1st thing I would do is add a fuel filter, there may have been dirt in line or dirt/water in tank and with time & vibration it got into carb after you cleaned, you could change carb if you have an extra,it will save time, then you can disassemble old carb and cleanout/rebuild I would check 3 holes in main jet body that allow gas into main jet from carb bowl that they aren't plugged & also passage in carb body between inlet nipple & float needle seat for dirt or blockage while rebuilding

Well, right after I got it I cleaned the carb (there was some, rust, etc. in the bowl), flushed it all out with carb cleaner, that sort of stuff. The carb is tight on the block and the gasket is good. It doesn't have a fuel filter. I can't say as much for anything with the valves or how much wear the engine has on it, but I know all the bearings to do with the deck are good. There was a nest of some sort on top of the head - I cleaned it out the best I could, but there is still a tiny bit of junk in-between some of the cooling fins. The spark plug wire is chewed pretty bad, but it's still got good spark. Carb problems, right? I have a good complete one off of a '94 11.5 hp I/C that I could put on it - the air intake is just a slight bit different, but it'll still fit. Should I do that? Thanks.

As an add-on to 1st reply, make sure passages between cooling fins on eng are clear & not plugged with grass, leaves or mouse nest, restricting cooling air & overheating eng. You'll have to remove sheetmetal covers on eng to check this.

Drop bowl on carb, check for a load of dirt/water in bowl, while apart check that 3 holes in main jet body that let gas into main jet from bowl are clear & not plugged, also check operation of float, that same operates freely & is not sticking or stiff,if you haven't replaced fuel filter, replace it,same may be plugged or restricted causing eng to go lean.Other possibilitys, carb loose at block or gasket bad, carbon on valve stems, causing valves to stick in guides when eng working under heavy load, leaking valves, leaking head gasket, worn parts in eng, worn parts or bad bearings on mower deck overloading & overheating eng when cutting high or wet grass.
