What gear should I use for mowing grass with my '74 14hp Jim Dandy? It's got a 5 ft. deck, and I'm mowing moderately hilly terrain w/medium thickness grass.

It's got a little tag on one of the differential bolts with "5.17" stamped on it - I would take that to mean it has 5.17 diff. gears? Is that fast or slow for something like this?

That I don't know. I just approved your membership to the group this morning so I would advise you to ask that question there. I never paid any attention to those numbers myself. I've only had one Jim Dandy and it didn't matter to me if it was fast or slow because it was just for show. Someone on the group will know but be patient as the nice weather is keeping guys from the computer right now.

If I recall correctly, the JDs came with two choices of rear ends. One was very fast and the other very slow. That may have been over by 1974 so you may have the same gaering as a 1614 in which case I would probably mow in 2nd given the fact you have a 5 ft. deck. Down to first when things get too thick. Eventually, you'll choose the gear that suits you best after you get to know the tractor and what it can do.
