I had a similar problem today on my 1200 cub cadet with a 241 Kohler. On Monday I changed the oil, plug(autolite 295), and filter (put in non-detergent 30W). Today I cut grass for about 40 minutes and it sounded like it was running out of gas, and it coughed, I shut off the key, and it backfired ran a bit and died. I opened the hood and found that the air cleaner was not on, the engine was noticeably hotter, and when I removed the dipstick there was white smoke coming out of the dipstick (more than usual). After almost messing my pants and 10 minutes later, it started back up and I drove it into the garage. I plan to pull the plug tomorrow and see what it looks like. Does anyone know what would the fix be, or is it a hiccup and be o.k.? Email me and let me know your thoughts, and would love to have someone troubleshoot it with me tomorrow in the morning if at all possible. Thanks in advance, Bruce903.

On second thought, may I suggest that you click on the link and check the Kohler recommended oils.

Well, the correct Autolite Spark Plug for the Kohler K301 is #216.

I would suggest that you check your head cooling fins. The air to cool the engine is drawn in the flywheel side of the motor, through the screen mesh, and the blower wheel forces the air up and over the head cooling fins. This HAS to be clean.

Overheating an engine is NOT a good thing.

You may also have a bad Magneto Coil. If it gets hot, and quits, you are done until it cools down.

Symptoms of a sticking valve is same as you describe but includes complete loss of compression when it sticks open. Check the exhaust and intake valves for carbon buildup on the stem or for a warped valve stem. You can remove the valves by removing the head and the cover over the valve springs on the side of the engine. Fixing the problem may be as simple as scraping the carbon off and polishing the stems with 400 grit sand paper. Also a good idea to clean all the cooling system fins while you are correcting the problem. This is a common problem on Kholer engines.
