I have a 12.5 IC gold briggs. It gets real hot and dies. Took shield off and no restrictions in the air flow. Does any one have any other thoughts as to why the motor gets this hot? Thanks Sam

Your Magnetron coil could be going bad when the engine gets hot.

dont know what you mean by air flow. could be either a clogged air filter or trash in the cooling fins of the engine.

cooling fins are clean, no air restrictions. It acts like it is running out of gas but that is not the problem. It gets hot and dies Sam

Overheat? Basics- lean fuel mix, can carb be adjusted or is it a late model fixed jet? Ignition timing- slight retarded would heat a bit- this Magnetron? possible to check timing and adjust/advance- pickup unit should have some adjustment. Oil- are you running the cheapest 5-30 car oil on special? Bad move- use briggs 30 wt or Valvoline racing oil to 20-50, 15-40 diesel oil. Fuel? if your using a gasahol-10% ethanol mist you may be acting lean- try a 100/1 2 stroke mixture for fuel a couple times- tight rings and bore with oil cutting ethanol blends sometimes noted when new. Theres no timing adjustment on a Magnetron ignition coil. Only coil to flywheel air gap which should be .010/.012, When the engine shuts down check for spark to the plug. If no spark replace the coil. While the cover is off check the flywheel key, This could be partly sheered causing timing to be off and overheat.
