Anatomy of the outer engine?

I was given a Craftsman Kohler-Magnum 10 HP riding lawn mower of recent vintage. I first suspect the coil as I hear a loud "click" when turned on with the battery good, and a coil/starter is the one that clicks, but I'm hesitant to strip to access the top attachment bolt until I can scarf a user's manual/further advice. Help! I have a huge front yard now, and it takes 3 hours to mow by hand..... .yuck.

I think you are calling the starter solenoid the coil. I have never heard a coil click. If the engine won't crank you may have a bad solenoid or the battery connections are dirty. All connections need to be nice and shiny. Any corrosion is a good insulator. Hal
