Kohler backfires under load / loses power

I have a 10 hp Kohler (K241) under full throttle (and under load) it loses power and backfires out the exhaust.

Last year I replaced a burnt exhaust valve, set the tappet clearance for the exhaust valve to .017” and intake valve to .008 (found a repair manual for this engine on Kohler’s website – was very helpful). I also noticed that the trigger module (it has a breakerless ignition) was about .250” from the flywheel, so I also set its clearance to .005”. That seemed to make it start much easier.

Last fall it started to act up (backfire / losing power) and I put it away until this spring. I checked the clearance and it was still at .017 – thinking that the exhaust valve wasn’t closing I set it to .025 – that didn’t seem to make a difference.

Thinking that it might have been running too lean I also tried adjusting the carburetor when it was warm and under load, but that didn’t help either.

I’d really like to get this thing running great again since the old Allis cuts my lawn so much better than the neighbor’s new JD…

What else should I be looking at?

This weekend I put in a new plug, ran some mystery oil in the fuel and about a half hour into cutting the yard it appeared to be getting better - runs fine at 3/4 throttle, which is where I normally have it set.

Thanks again for all the replies - I really appreciate all of your insight.

When you replace the plug, be sure to check the plug wire. I had one on a K301 that had burned the cap loose from the wire inside the plug boot. the symptoms were the same.

Outside of the marvel oil,the next thing is to pull head & valves and clean guides, have same problem with piston & cyl on model airplane engines, they varnish up fast because we use castor oil in fuel, for yrs I've used hoppes #9 gun cleaner & a small bore brass wire cleaning brush, there used to be some really good cleaners for carbon & varnish removal out there, but the epa took care of that yrs ago,you might try tower hobbies & some of the other hobby centers on line to see what they have,as far as a muffler,if it's the long body with welded pipe & split 90 on end to connect to eng try in wheel horse, deere and some of the other old time tractors in the riding mower section of outdoor power equip on ebay, good used ones show up there fairly often.

For a muffer Brad, your best bet, and the cheapest is ebay. I dont know what your orignal muffler looks like, but you can adapt ones from other machines sometimes. The muffler that many cub cadets use is common and cheap on ebay. You can also make up big tractor stack and flapper cap using a muffler for a Farmall Cub, pn IH 1, from TSC if you wanna got that route. You can email me a pic of your current muffler set up if you need assistance. Mike cadetpwr@hotmail.com

Run mystery marvel oil in the gas, that will take care of the sticking exhaust valve issue, very common on K series Kohlers. A very common problem and well talked about over on the other Cub Cadet forums due to them using Kohlers predominatly. Mike

You may have an ign coil going bad or a plug going bad,try changing plug & see if it helps.Had the same problem with a K301(12hp)drove me crazy 1/2 a summer till coil up & died suddenly one day,try pulling hv lead from coil & with a strong lite, see if oil leaking into wire nipple, mine was leaking oil, misfire & dieing only happened after eng and coil hot and over 3/4 throttle.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll get a new plug, run some mystery oil and take a hard look at the coil first.

If that doesn’t take care of it, what’s the best way for the average guy to clean the valve guides?

One more question – does anyone have a reasonable (cheap) source for mufflers? This engine is on an Allis 310 about a 1972 or so. I checked last year with a local parts place and they wanted $150 for a new muffler. I thought that was a bit steep since I paid $300 for the tractor with mower deck and blower attachment…

Thanks again for you’re help.

Brad

When u replaced the exhaust valve did u clean the valve guide
The guide could have a varnish build up on it an when engine is good an hot guide to valve stem clearance gets tighter
Valve can be sticking causing ur backfire an loss of power
Good Luck
