The engine just quit peroid. I have found that the fuel solenoid on the bottom of the Mukini carb does not seem to work. It will run by squirting gas into the carb. I have ordered new solenoid from dealer but my question is: what function is this solenoid performing other than fuel shutoff. Is it a required safety issue?

The solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor is an anti dieseling solenoid. Its purpose is to shut off fuel flow so the engine will shut down when you turn off the key.

To your comment "The solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor is an anti dieseling solenoid. Its purpose is to shut off fuel flow so the engine will shut down when you turn off the key.", let's add... WITHOUT having a big backfire in the muffler from unburned gas buligin up in the HOT muffler.

Sam, the 525 sounds like a big garden tractor, but I'm probably wrong. A solenoid is basically a relay, and are often used to control larger currents. Most newer cars have a fuel pump relay, which lowers the current demand on the ignition switch. Relay basically control a larger current with a smaller current. they can also use a smaller or higher voltage to switch a smaller or higher voltage, as well as switching different polarities, depending on how the "coil" wires are wired up. Relays and solenoids can be very versatile and useful devices. Your post reminded me of just how useful they can be =).

You can rest assured, if they didnt need it, it wouldnt be on there.
