While at the local junk yard I noticed the foreign cars have tiny little alternators on them. Has anyone tried one on their garden tractor? Would they be simple to wire up? Thanks, Joe Fabregas

Few years ago I had a MTD 11 HP garden/yard "Toy" with Briggs vertical shaft electric start. To the top of the fly wheel I bolted a 3" pulley on a small (2-3") long shaft. I mounted off the front of the engine at the same pulley plane was a Delco auto single-wire alternater. The engine produces 11hp @ 3600 rpm. the alternater produces a modest amount of amps at 12V. Certainly was more than enough to recharge the 12V battery I carried behind to supply power to the Western plow hoist in front that lifted the 48" (x 3/8" thick) plow blade. Worked great for years. Needless to say, the body/cab was homemade. FUN.

I think that most garden tractors have a starter/generator, have not heard of any starter/alt., unless they have them on newer tractors.
