I recently had the 11-hp Briggs engine overhauled. (New rings, carb. overhaul, valves ground, etc.) The engine runs great but when you first start it, the engine will smoke like crazy for about 2~3-minutes. When all the oil has burned off it runs all day without any more smoke or problems.

Any idea what causes this and what's the cure?

Thanks, JB9959

If eng was re-ringed with std size rings and cyl not bored for an os piston & ring set,the most probable cause of smoke would be rings that are at the end of their expansion range when cold & allowing a small amount of oil into cyl when eng at rest & a small amount of ring leak-by till eng gets hot & a slightly out of round cyl due to wear, once eng gets hot, cyl, rings & piston expand and make a tight seal, also I'm assuming whoever did job honed cyl to break glaze & speed up ring seating, the only way to check this is to pull head & see if oil present in cyl & crank eng and see if any leakage past rings when eng cold.If this is the problem as far as a cure, eng would have to be torn down & cyl bored & fitted with an os piston and ring set.

That makes a lot of sense. I also have a Kohler that was overhauled and it does the same thing. (Same mechanic too.)

I think the Briggs was overfilled with oil when it leaked the last time. I started it up yesterday and it only smoked a very short time before clearing up.

Thanks for your help.

What kind of oil filter does it have... if oiled foam, did they oil it too much?

I'll watch the oil level next time I start it up to be sure that it is not overfilled.

When I first started it up after the overhaul, I put in a new foam air cleaner. I may have put too much oil on the foam but that has been several starts ago. I'll check in any case.

Thanks for the tips.
