I pulled the crankcase cover off and there are two gear driven counter weights that are mounted to the cover. I assume they need to be "timed" with the crank when installing the cover. How do you do this? This is a mid 80's horizontal engine.

These are your balance gears, to time them when you put it together. There should be two bolts in the cover, take them out then take two small peices of wire, put in the holes, turn the gears untill the rods lock into a hole in the gear. Then you can put the engine back together, that will time it.
