Hi,
Just picked up an old Toro Wheel Horse with an 8 hp Briggs and Stratton engine.
Model: 195707
Type: 0121
Code: 93011410
Hadn't been run in 10 years, put in a new battery and it fired right up but then died after about a minute. Engine turns over fine still but won't start. Gas leaking from the carb. onto the frame. Any suggestions for a rebuild kit or totally new carb. If this sounds like the problem advice would be greatly appreciated. Also where to buy such items if readily available.
I've seen lots of rebuild kits online but don't know what type of engine this is...horizontal, vertical etc. Thanks

You didn"t say if you flushed the gas tank and put in new gas? If you did not, that could very well be the problem or at least a big part of the problem.

The carb kit for this engine is Briggs & Stratton #497535. It will cost around $40.00. I get most of my briggs parts from Jacks small engines in MD via UPS, but any small engine shop should be able to get you the carb kit.

19 cubic inch. probably 'Horizontal' crankshaft with Cylinder upright. If cylinder is laying down with the flywheel on top the crankshaft is 'vertical'. Carb float and needle/seat assembly known to dryout/corrode when setting a long time, main jet and needle foul also from setting- clean with fine wire and carb cleaner. RN

It's probably going to be fine if you don't screw up the linkage.By fact that it ran makes the main jets open. By fact it stuck and gas was leaking indicates only which was described that the float and needle have reacted to old fuel and got sticky. It goes without saying perhaps but well yes it goes without saying.

When you take it apart, give the float a shake. It may have gas in it and it will slosh when you shake it.
