I have a 1980's 12Hp Murray riding mower. I was wondering if anybody has a diagram of the breakdown of the motor? I am a student at a vocational school and we have to rebuild a lawnmower motor as a project, so I figured I would overhaul my old mower. It needs new rings, the engine rattles a little bit, but I think it is the valves not the rod or bearings. What are they supposed to be set on? Also I need a Govenor gear for it, the one in it is shot. Would it give the engine more power if I advanced the cam forward one tooth on the gear? Its not going to be used for mowing anymore. If this does give it more power would advancing the timein of the cam be turning it clockwise or counterclock wise? Thanks for your help.

Check top of shroud for numbers- a Briggs&Stratton should start with a 24 or 25- the cubic inch displacement, then check the Briggs sites. Been a while since I had to look up those- had a rack of parts books a parts store to use. If you have a Tecumseh like I have in old Murray , check Tecumseh site. RN

Well there is a site for racing garden tractors on Yahoo where these guys ate for last years breakfast and exhausted more than xxx or i will ever know about goosing up these B&S engines.Insofar the noise and where you want to go, you have to make a decision. To rebuild it to stock is one thing but then to extract max hp is another. What I'm saying is that you don't want to do it twice.I was not a fan of Murray but that is my problem and am sure I would make it do the job.You must note all the links towards your goal and one is the pulley belt config. Those cheap pullies fry and warp. They open up and change the ratio but burn the belt in the process. So there are many tips you can find elsewhere. Please return and share what you have found and be open to what some respond.

It has a Brigs on it, not sure of the numbers yet, I have the mower at my Grandma's right now in the barn, ill try to get out there sometime this weekend. I wanted to use it as a stock pulling mower. I was just wondering if advancing the cam would help out at all give just even a little more horsepower. I know it will in a car or truck, but I didnt know if it would really do the same for a lawnmower engine. I have a John Deere 111 I completely restored, so I decided to only show it and not pull it. Thanks for yalls help.
