My 70+ year old neighbor called me and said his rider won't start, he put in a new battery and still nothing. Over the phone I told him to check the safety switches.

It makes no noise at all when turning the key, could it be a solenoid?

Just need some ideas before I stop over to take a look at it.

Randy

Hey Kent, I will pass that along to the neighbor when he takes the starter in to the dealer. It looks to me that the plastic spiral is all messed up also.

you do not need a new Starter. All you need todo is replace the starter gear. About $6.00 from a B&S dealer.

Well I went over last night, and it was a Montgomery Wards, not a Sears.

Anyway, I turned the key and heard a slight click, tried to turn the engine by hand but would not budge.
Pulled the starter cover off and the gear was jammed in the flywheel and broken plastic pieces were laying in there, so hopefully just a new starter will take care of it.

Check wiring harness in area of sol & behind dash, for an inline fuse, sears usually has a 20-25A auto style spade fuse sticking out of wire loom covering over wiring harness.

Thanks Hal, I will try and get all the electrical connections checked out when I go over there tonight and hopefully get him going.

I would check all the battery connections to make sure they are shiny and tight. Check for voltage
at the solenoid when the key switch is twisted to the start position. This should be a small wire.
If there's no voltage present when in the start position check for voltage on that terminal at the switch. There should be voltage on that terminal only when the key is turned to the start position. If you have voltage at the switch terminal there's a break in the wire or a bad connection at the solenoid. On most solenoids you
jumper them with a piece of wire. Just be careful
doing this. Hal
