I tried to charge my moms battery in her BCS tiller, and when I hooked it up, the needle went all funky-like, ya know , back and forth. So I switched it to 6volt. Same thing. No It aint on there backwards. Any ideas are appriciated.

Lanse,
If you do not have it hooked up backward, and that is what you are describing, then you have a internal short in the battery, and it needs to be replaced.

Disconnect POS cable from battery, reconnect charger to battery(make sure you have correct polarity)if same thing happens with meter on charger, disconnect charger & check battery with a hydrometer, you may have a weak/bad cell(sometimes a cell will be shorted & go so dead it will rev its internal polarity)or a bad internal cell connector,in either of above cases battery will have to be replaced. If meter reading normal when charging check for a short in wiring harness on tiller, bad ign sw(if tiller has an ign sw similar to lawn mower type, make sure ign sw in off or stop position before trying to charge battery) or contacts welded together in starter sol.
