I have a 1974 Speedex 1030 that has just started acting up. It seems to be missing and running rough and it also backfires when idling down. Aney Ideas? I have adjusted the main jet to no avail. The spark plug has heavy black soot on it.
Thanks.

If you have checked all the things everyone else told you to check, did you check the points to make sure you have good fire there? If the points get a little corroded, you will get a week spark and that will cause running rough and backfiring like you are describing.

check your air flow, sometimes a new air filter does wonders

new plug gets rid of some problems too

drain the gas and put in known good stuff

check easy stuff first

I leaned the carb to 1 turn out from stop and cleaned the plug. Also checked out air cleaner and the cartridge is like new with foam outer wrap. I will try new gas and taking the precleaner off. Thanks.

I have had good looking plugs get oil fouled and just never work right afterwards, or I was desperate and pulled old crummy plug out of a junk motor and it ran just fine

you might have electronic ignition so points suggestion might not work

if you try the easy stuff and no joy, then carefully take carb apart and check it out, might have some dirt or water in, in-line gas filter prevents lots of carb problems

rule of thumb on float level, bottom of float s/b parallel to carb base with carb upside down

You may need to lean the carburetor. Hal
