445 won't start

Have a John Deere 445 that won't start. Mowed the lawn and parked it for a half hour and then fired it up and it ran rough, then quit running.
Just put a set of plugs in it and a fuel filter. Getting plenty of fuel squirting down the throat---very easily flooding. Have good spark too.

After blowing the gas out of it, it'll fire maybe twice and just won't take off and run. Not sure if a timing sensor or something is out on it or something fuel delivery related or what.

Thanks,

Buzz

I would also look closely at push rods, I have seen lots of times where cam was fine but push rods were bent. Also to mention John Deere does not produce Kawasaki engines that they have taken the beating for... any Kawasaki engine manufactured during that time period with a model designation FD620D had the plastic cam, it was not a Deere specific problem.

You may want to pull a valve cover off and crank the engine over to see if you have a broken cam gear. If rocker arms do not move its the cam gear. You may want to also check the harness for the injector. I have seen this harness ground out on the block and cycle way too much fuel at start up. Couple things off top my head to check!

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Sounds like the cam gear was a problem on those?

Yes it was on the 425 and the 445. back when these were new, many people had a heck of a time getting Deere to warranty it, even though they knew it was a common problem, with a poor design. I've seen these fail with as little as 25 hours on them, and as high as 1000, and everywhere in between during the 10 years I worked at a Deere dealership.

The replacement parts will be all steel, and are available from Deere.

The 455 had a diesel engine made by Yanmar, and doesn't share this problem.
