What am I missing here?

Hi all,

I have a vertical crank briggs engine #31M777 and I am trying to put the charging system together. my engine has the 9 / 5 amp dual coil alternator with the 2 pin plug. I purchased a 691185 voltage regulator and hooked it up to the alternator plug. I also hooked the red wire up to the battery and grounded the case.

Problem is that the "regulator" dont regulate too well. After a while, the battery voltage gets up over 16.5 volts unless I turn something on like the lights. As long as the lights are on, the battery stays around 13 or 14 volts.

Questions are, did I buy the correct regulator? Does the regulator expect to see some kind of load all the time? Maybe my regulator is only a rectifier unit? maybe I let the smoke out and it is blown up?

Any charging system gurus out there that can help?

I AGREE ONE WIRE DC IF YOU FEEL THE WIRES AT THE PLUG FROM MOTOR [MAY BE COVERED WITH TUBING] YOU SHOULD FEEL A BUMP, THAT IS A DIODE 12V DC THE OTHER WIRE IS AC FOR LIGHTS

isnt one of those terminal dc to charge the battery and the outher one AC to run the lights and the end of each coils of the stator connected to ground inside of the flywheelwhere the stator is mounted .

I will try, what is the ACV you have at the regulator? Was the regualtor/rectifier that was on your tractor identicle to the one you bought? Briggs uses 2 main regulators, 691185 and 691188, the 691185 is 2 wires in one connector, this is ACV, 1 red wire, this is DCV. the 691888, has two wires on it, colors, cannot remember.
Anyway,if the one you had originally is the same as the one you bought, then yes, you are hooked up right. the 2 ACV wires are hooked to a connector coming out of stator. The red one to battery voltage, then have the unit bolted down to the engine. So, you are hooked up right. The only other thing might be if you have a bad battery or too much ACV going into reg. All clear now? lol
