Is it necessary to replace the crankshaft seal if the motor comes apart? The seal wasn't leaking before.

How do I remove them? I"m afraid of damaging the metal around it.

the rubber in the seal gets brittle and can leak after being disturbed, fairly easy to change while motor is apart, after you get burned by not changing one you start changing them every time

they make seal remover tools, lever kinda end on a screwdriver, or you can drill small hole in metal side of seal then use ice pick or pin punch to pry seal out

They are simply friction fitted.Often they can be twisted out with a med size channelock pliers from the outside. If more force is needed a socket, slightly smaller than the seal and an extension can be use to drive it out.KEY ISSUE,patience is imperative,a gentle tap, tap, tap should always be used.WHACK,WHACK,WHACK is for other pursuits.Never try to bull a small engine case as they can be quite fragile. Without a seal driver to install the seal, oil it,place it on the hole and try to manually get it started levelly into the hole.Once started, place a small block of wood over the seal, and tap it into place.Check every few taps for straitness and correct with taps on high side.

For the small price of them, replace them, 50% of the time they will leak after being disturbed.
