I've got a 1991 John Deere F710 with a Kawasaki FC540V-AS12 engine. 2 weeks ago when I parked it it was running fine. Tried to start it yesterday and all it would do was backfire out the exhaust. Today it is backfiring out the carb. Not rolling hard or kicking back. Plenty of blue spark through the plug. Valves opening and closing. Has 125# compression. I need to know the valve settings, air gap for the coil, and sparkplug gap. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ted.

Sounds to me it has a bad ingnition igniter or as some call the trigger
Its a small silver box about size of a quarter with a single white wire going to it
Only early units had this Later unit it was made into coil
Coil air gap .012 should be good
Good Luck Gary
Mail me if u wish

Still trying to figure this thing out. I've changed card soleniod, checked flywheel key, checked valves, both working and set at .006. Don't know if the gap is right or not. Also changed spark plug. What do I try next? Any more suggestions are welcome. Thanks again, Ted.

Try a new spark plug before you get to involved. Sometimes I have had this problem and a new plug has fixed it. Cheap fix!
