Bolens made two styles of 12hp tractors. The first style is known as "Tube Frame" models, because the frame of the tractor consisted of two tubular frame rails connecting the front axle support to the transaxle. ....They had 16-6.50x8" tires on the front, and 23-8.50x12" tires on the rear. ....The Wisconsin engine used was a model TRA-12D. The model and serial numbers of these tractors were usually located on a stick-on plate which was attached to the frame rail or to the steel "saddle" which the footrests bolt to. ....It would be between your foot and your butt as you sit on the tractor, but I can't recall which side. Late 1960's models were brown (actually, Bolens called it Cordovan) with red wheel rims and ivory hood & fenders. .....The model 1225 tractor had a Wisconsin engine with a hydrostatic trans. .....Early 1970's models were white with red wheels. ....Models were 1253, 1254, 1256. Not sure, but I think only the 1256 was hydrostatic. The other style of 12hp tractors were know as "Large-Frame" models. ....All large frame models were hydrostatic. The brown/ivory model was the model 1250 using a Wisconsin model S-12D engine, and was introduced around 1967. ....It had 27-8.50x15" rear tires. Some of the tractors had the model/serial number decal attached to the sheet metal surrounding the back of the engine. ....You would have to open the hood and look around.
