I'll admit, I know nothing about my recently aquired Bolens 1556. So far, I was able to ' unpuzzle ' Prior Owner's electrical work,
Sears and Case Tecumseh powered tractors close
enough for ' basic ' wiring. Hot wired engine,
fired right up. Ran jumper to mag kill, made up
new AC wires. I know from Gravely experience regulator must be grounded. I might keep the
machine, as a low cost landscape tool puller,
can't invest in accessories, no floor space,
have Gravely L + Comm 12 stuff for ' real'
work.

Have Bought + Sold a few ' junk ' tractors / riders over the years, Somehow this one seems like a keeper. I'm considering removing the
entire PTO unit, and piping all power to wheels,
good / Bad Idea ?

My new fear is the Hydro Static drive,
How do you check fluid level ? A Wheel
Horse guy made refrence to a tow valve,
does Bolens use one too ? The PTO valve
seems stuck, only moves aprox 1/4 in

I plan to run engine a minute to pressureize system, did major cleaning / priming in battery box area.

Check on right hand side axle [inside of wheel] should be a pin you pull out to let that side free wheel which lets that axle to rotate backwards as you are pushing it.

I don't believe there is a tow valve on these. They shouldn't be towed, but if you must, do it slowly and only as far as necessary

For the oil level, when you are on the seat, there should be a small metal cap between your legs, sticking up through the fender deck assembly. Thats the oil reservoir for the transmission. I had a 1256 and it had a short dipstick on the cap.

I currently have a 1254, same tractor, but has a gear transmission instead of hydro. Pretty tough little tractors. Google sonny's bolens, and you can find all the manuals you'll need, as well as a supply of parts.

Your right, I didn't know what cap was for, was caked with mud, washed, brushed, got it off, fluid
a bit low, good pink color. Looks like auto
trans fluid, if you saw the wiring, you'd doubt
" anything ' was done right. Ordered a manual
repairs going like herd of turtles, but progressing. Is a hydrostatic a good choice
for pulling, or should I hope for a geared model ?

Thanks to you, and all for great ideas and advice
