OK here it goes. I have a 5 hp vertical shaft B&s engine on the leaf/lawn vacuum. It has not started in a couple of years and no spark. I took off the flywheel and was going to replace points & condenser. When I looked at it the points seem to work the opposite of the ones on my JD Wico mags. The points are open most of the time and only close for a split second which seems backwards to me. The end of the condenser serves as one side of the points.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct. If correct how do I set the point gap.

Should I replace both of them if I am getting no spark?

Thank You JD Gimpl

The electronic conversion kit can be be bought /ordered at your local mower dealer or on line at mfgsupply, jacks small engines or outdoor distributors. The mod & type#'s of eng are usually stamped into one of the sides of flywheel cover, you may have to clean off well & use a bright light to see.

If there is rust on the outside of the flywheel magnet you should sand it off. Make sure the little flywheel key is not dented. You did not mention if you confirmed there was no spark. If the machine has been sitting for a long time you probably have bad gas in the tank.

The points open as the flywheel comes around and breaks them.Points are set at .20.To set turn crank until high cam opens points, loosen screw at condenser and move condenser up or down until point gap is .20.There is a place to use a screwdriver for this.GOOD LUCK..... .....

You might as well replace the condenser while you have it apart! That is sort of tricky to do, but i'm sure you can handle it. The little wires that go thru the end of the condenser and the poast, are held in by a little spring. With the complete points and condenser set comes a littl cup-shaped tool, which is used to push down on the spring with one hand, while holding the condenser with the other hand, and then, with another hand, you insert both teeny wires thru the condenser, and let the spring go up to hold all together. Be sure to do this while sitting in a 12 ft. cleared area of your garage floor! This because that little plastic cup has a mind if its own! It doesn't want to work, and at the first opportunity, it will fly off to places unseen, leaving you with numerous pieces hidden in far off holes, or under something, which, after much diligent searching, to no avail, you will find in yer boot when you take it off to go to bed! You can avoid all of that by purchasing an electronic ignition kit. Follow the instructions! It usually doesn't require removal of flywheel. Just cut the wire leading under the flywheel, and connect it to the wire on the electronic box, and fasten that to a good solid metallic ground! Note: some engines can't be used with that kit, but most will be ok!

Thanks Rusty J

Where would I get a kit from? Also where is the model number on an engine like this.

Thanks much, JD Gimpl
