MHAe been heloing my neighbor with getting his mid 80s Wheel Horse ready for spring. It has an Onan P220 (or 220P??), not the original motor, in it.

We just had it off for new valve stem seals and a gasket on the pulley end to deal with the oil loss he started having last year. Motor is in otherwise good shape.

Except it won't run. When we mounted it back up, it didn't have any spark. I found a poor connection on the line to the hot post on the coil. Fixed that. The connector on the end of the wire from the condensor was broken off. Fixed that and ran it to the ot post on the coil.

With those taken care of it fired right up, but only ran for maybe five seconds before it died. We're back to no spark.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

An safety switches, like seat, clutch, implement clutch, parking brake, that may be faulty? I know the engine should not turn over with any of these open, but if not orig. engine hard to tell how it's wired. Before you go through these things check wires to points again, and for possible grounding of points--maybe they slipped closed.

I like the safety switch idea up to a point, but I'm not sure it would hae run for the short time that it did. He had to cut the harness when he took the old engine out of it and spliced the harness for this engine in with spde connectors. I suppose it's possible he hooke back up on eo f the safety switches. I'll check that out.

I believe the ignition is electronic. I'm probably gonna change out his condensor at the least. I'm wondering, where that connector broke off, if the condensor wasn't stressed from running on a weak connection and gave out when it got a good connection back.
