I bought a C-145 Wheelhorse lawn tractor in 1977 and it still runs better than a Deere. I have to replace the battery and all the stores have batteries that say 320 at 32 degrees or 200 at 32 degrees. I'm sure the 320 and 200 is cranking power. I'm not sure which cranking power I should buy. The manual only says "use a 12 volt with 32 amp hours. Can you help me? It's mowing time again in Michigan.

Best L/G battery I have found is one at AUTOZONE. It is 425 CA ( Cranking AMP ). CA number is the rating of a battery at 32 degrees F. CCA number is the rating of a battery at 0 degrees F. CCA will alway be lower then the CA rating.

Contrary to what every one says, buy the highet CCA battery you find. The lower the CCA, the less amperage to go to the starter when hot or cold, and low amperage to starter is what cause starter failure. And that is a fact, I am in the lawn and garden business, have been for over 30 years. The people who say it don't make any differance also whine because their battery last a year or 2 then is bad or their starter is burnt up. I use 325CCA ( or the biggest I can buy)batteries in my own stuff, we just replaced the one in my dads mower, was 6 years old, not 1-2 years. I also keep connections clean, charge batteries before storage and then again when I get out to use it. and normally a GOOD battery costs maybe $10.00 more! If you think this is not true, call a shop that works on starters and ask them what low amps does to a starter. cheap battery 19.95 every 2 years, plus maybe a $100-$200.00 starter
good battery 39.95 every 6-8 years, plus maintenace, you do the math

I've bought cheapo and expensive batteries for my Cub Cadets. No matter what, they last about 2-3 years. The cheap Farm and Fleet battery starts my 1250 Cub Cadet in below zero weather, no sweat. I use whatever fits, watch which side the positive and negative posts are on.

Cheaper the better.--Around here you get about 14-15 months out of a new garden tractor battery that has a 12 mo. limited warrenty.

Those are "Cold Cranking Amperage" (CCA) numbers. The higher the number, the more reserve capacity the battery has. If you don't use the tractor in winter weather, then it doesn't matter all that much. Go for the cheapest battery and start cutting grass.

Just buy a battery--hook it up---and start it up --and go mow! Don't worry about "cranking amps"! Neither one will hurt the starter!
