Had a Toro 12 - 32 bought new, every few years the SCR [ Silicon Control Rectifier ] would fail.
The dealer would smile, and sell me a new one. Would run, but not restart, if blown.

An Ariens rider made an appearance = same thing, blown SCR . I'm fed up with buying them, any ideas for a homebrew, using Radio Shack type parts ?

This goes Ditto for Kohler / Tecumseh /
AMF Harley Davidson which all use a similar, 3 terminal rectifier.

You're doing something wrong, I've run Kohler engines for thirty years and never replaced a rectifier. The terminals have to be clean and tight and it has to be bolted to a clean ground.

Not the part, it is owner caused failure. They normall go out because:
1.bad ground on reg-rect
2.too small amp battery
3.bad/corroded connections on battery
4.corroded/loose connection on reg/rect
5.bad battery- this causes reg/rect to be constantly charging at full capacity when running, creating excessive heat and failed part.
6. poor/improper battery maintenance.
I have had a LOT of Kohler engines, all with original reg/rect and never had a failure and when they come into my shop 90% of the time it is one of the above.

Is it grounded well? Bad grounding could goof things up.
