Is there a way to test the starter? I have a JD317, thought the battery was dead as it wouldn't crank, took the battery to be checked and it was weak but not dead. I got it charged up, but nothing. The next day I try it and it cranks over and starts. I had it shut off and started about 4 times that day with no problems. The fifth time I tried to start it nothing. I put it back on the charger and still nothing. Let it sit for a day and then it cranked again. Now nothing. The starter on this machine is hard to get at, so would rather test it somehow if possible before yanking it off. Figure it is either the starter or the safety switch on the seat, I tried bypassing the safety switch and that didn't seem to make a difference. Any ideas?

Thanks for your time.

It may be a bad starter solenoid that's not engaging the bendix. Hal

They have an inertial starter drive, NOT a "positive shift" setup, where the dive is engaged by the solenoid..

I think I may have figured it out, I think it was the neutral switch not being made. It worked tonight after playing with it, so I'll see if it works again tomorrow, if so that must have been it.

Thanks for the ideas.

Connect a set of "jumper cables" to a car or truck.

Ground the black clamp to a good ground on the 317's engine. Touch the red clamp to the STARTER SIDE stud on the starter solenoid... does it spin that way?

(You may need to remove the battery and the battery tray from the 317 to get at the starter solenoid.)
