If this is a battery ignition engine, CHECK COIL POLARITY! Be sure the negative side of the coil goes to the points. Why I say this is years ago a guy, who was an electrition, brought me a 1250 Cub Cadet with a K-301AS engine. He had just finish a rebuild and would only run as you describe your engine does. The first thing I ask him was did he have the coil polarity right. He said yes. I gave the coil a glance and it look connected correctly. Worked on this engine over an hour without any luck. I was even swapping parts from a 1650 I had. I finaly dug into the wire and found the coil connected with the PLUS terminal to the point. I switched the connection on the coil and the engine run lika dream. My last comment was it was a heck of a deal when an electrician can not follow polarity.

If this is a kohler K series eng & carb has 2 needles on it,1 on side of carb(idle) & 1 on top just in front of throttle shaft(hi-speed)turn this needle in finger tight, then back out 2-2 1/2 turns, this will probably give you a very rich hi-speed,with throttle set at max speed adj needle for max rpm & smoothest running, then throttle back & adj idle needle & throttle stop if needed,hi-speed must be set 1st,if you can't get hi-speed of eng to work then you probably have dirt/water in carb bowl, dirt in main jet or hi-speed passages in carb, right now hi end going lean, also as oldrustycars said, check your fuel supply, you may have a problem there.

Sure sounds like starving for fuel. All the crap in gas now can make the fuel lines collapse from the inside. Unless its brand new thats the first thing I'd replace, even though fuel may run out fine when disconnected. Also, gas can go bad in as little as 30 days, even Sta Bil may not help. Try fresh gas.
