I got the Bolens 1556 running, and I like it enough to keep [ for now ] Hydrostatic Trans
works well, steering drag link is very floppy, Ft Wheels flop both up and down, as well as left to right. Will strip sometime.

I'm baffled by the parking brake release,
it isn't where manual says it is. Using a pull wire, Could be on left, as that wire lever doesn't do much. Can't locate much of attachment lift, cylinder, and some linkage, no control. PTO is obvious, seems to spin all the time. Belt tightens when engaged, loosens when off.

the parking brake should be pressed down as you are pulling on that wire just a little more effort may be needed on the peddle when you feel the "click" release the peddle before leaving go of the wire

As for the front axle, that cast iron assembly its mounted in is prone to breaking and wearing out where the axle pivots. Something to look at closely while you are fixing the drag links.

As for the lift, there isn't much to it. A cylinder moves back and forth, and is attached to a plate with a couple pins on it. The attachments mount to the front or rear axle, and a bar connects from one of the pins on the plate to the attachment. Uses the axle mounting points as a pivot to lift and lower. converts the front and back motion to up and down.

Mower decks are different, and do have some complicated looking linkage that go with them. a picture is worth a thousand words here, I can't begin to describe it or how it works. I don't use the mower on mine. I do a lot of plowing, tilling, and use a sicklebar mower for the tall stuff a couple times a year.

I can't remember on the parking brake. I traded my hydro 1256 for a gear driven 1254 many years ago. I honestly never use the parking brake on the gear drive.

Check out Sonnys Bolens (use the link below to get there). You can get all sorts of parts, and manuals, (including service), and there are some pics that may help you out.
