Has anyone ever heard of these? Does anyone own one? In the 70s when I planted the garden for my parents, I was getting many seed catalogs, and I had a subscription to Organic Gardening Magazine. I used to find ads for Mainline in those publications. I even sent away for their product catalog. They seemed to be a heavy-duty piece of machinery, compared to something like a Troy-built, for example. I was thinking of getting one some day, if and when I can afford to have my own place. They said they had Acme single cylinder engines, with optional Lombardini Diesel engines.
I think they went all the way up to 17 hp.
Up to that point, I had never heard of either brand of engine.
So anyway, has anyone heard of these machines? And does anyone have one? Maybe they still make them.

I do have one. It's a BCS 8 HP model 25. I bought it in 1978 or so, and it's starting to get tired. The first few years I used it for garden tilling in the local area, and did 50-75 gardens each year, plus my own 1/2 acre. Also used it with a snow blowing attachment in winter. I've worn out several sets of blades, and replaced the clutch once. Had to replace bearings in the tiller head, and a slipper in the tiller engagement mechanism. The engine is an ACME, and has never been touched except for a couple of spark plugs. The machine is all gear drive, with a cone clutch. I moved up nearer the city, and mostly use the machine for snow blowing the last 10 years or so. The entire unit is Italian-built. It was imported by Mainline of Ohio, in London, Ohio. I think they've gone to a different maker. But they still carry parts, so I'm happy.

Mainline tillers were manufactured by BCS from 1972-1980. From 1980 they were manufactured by SEP. Engine and tiller parts are still available from a $400,000.00 inventory at:
Mainline of North America
81 U.S. Route 40
London, OH 43140
614 361-5343

Equipment sold by Mainline in the 70"s was built by BCS. Later Mainline models are built by SEP. BCS is very much alive and well selling two-wheel tractor systems with engines from 5 to 16hp. They now use Briggs IP or Vanguard engines in North America. The Acme engines are still sold in the US and parts are available should you come across and older unit. More information is available at our website www.bcsshop.com or on the importers website www.bcs-ameri

Barry, I recently saw your note re: Mainline Tillers. I have one that is about 10 years old and am now looking for attachments. I hope they are still in business? If you have any additional info please post at your convenience. p.s. this has been a terrific piece of equipment!

I read on the net elsewhere that BCS made the Mainline product. BCS is still in business, easily found by search engine. I have a BCS, 1989 mode, with a 12hp ACME gas OHV engine...still runs great & looking for surplus parts now or I wouldn't have seen your ?. The current BCS products have other brands of engines & no longer offer the ACME. But it's a tough machine, heavy steel gears, great dry clutch, real drum brakes that lock if needed.....p.s. get an electric start, it's much more costly to add it later...
Happy Gardening

There is a Mainline dealer in Ohio at 740-852-9733. Mr. Bob Daniel is the contact. The manufacturer of Mainline Rotory Tillers is S.E.P. in Italy. Mine has an Acme 8.2 HP engine.

Hi, just ran across listing on the web looking for parts for a Mainline Rotary Tiller with an Acme engine. You can obtain all tiller and engine parts at:

Mainline of North America
81 U.S. Route 40 London, OH 43140
740-852-9733

Tines are $6.40

Mainline was the original importer of BCS tillers, marketed under the name Mainline, we later changed manufacturers to SEP. We carry parts, attachments and offer service for all these machines.

Mainline was also a Howard Rotavator distributor in the 1950 through 1962. We have a great number of parts for the tractor mounted units and for the Gem two wheel tillers

We also import Goldoni Tillers and carry tillers, parts and attachments like the reciprocating spader.

These units last a long time and we are aware that people are looking for parts, service and manuals.

Many Thanks,

Paul Sullivan

The Mainline tiller is alive and well. The dealer is indeed Bob Daniel but his phone number is 614-294-4618. It's a great machine. I bought a commercial Mountaineer model in 1984. I finally had a plastic lever break in 2001. That's the only problem I have had. For the record, I grew up with my dad having a Troy-built tiller. He acted like I had committed sacrilege by buying the Mainline. But I will tell you, there is NO comparison, Mainline is 10 times the machine Troy-built is.

paul, i am having troble with the handle bars on my tiller, because they wont raise any higher, i'm at the top of my adjustment. my question is there a tower or something to make it taller, so my back does't hurt from bending over all the time by the way i am not a tall person so they must be something i am doing wrong or maybe put together wrong when we got from our friends who never use it . it is only three years old -thangs
