I have a 642 for sale It is a 1975 model They were a great combine built like a tank and very reliable with the Ford diesel. This one is in running order and will sell cheap as I haven't used it for 5 years.

I used to have a 620.... pretty good combines, if they aren't worn out. There is a reason he has the parts combine with it - New parts are available, but it often takes a long time to get them, and they're expensive. If he was a couple hundred miles closer and had a 6-30 corn head with it, I'd be looking at it.

It is one of the Claas-made models.

I have a Ford 642 combine, and I love it. I would like to know what year my combine is. It's serial # is 642000425 and its component # is 17- 270. The Ford 642 combine was built and painted in West Germany by Gerber (at the time) Claas. Ford sold the 642 combine (and other combines) over seas as well as in the US. The Ford 642 is the equivelent to the (green, white, and red) Class Dominator 85. Ford supplied the 642 combine from 1971 thru 1979. The only thing that I can not understand, is that CNH can't get parts for, not only the 642 combine, but it's engine as well. The only place that I'm able to get parts for the 642, (machine only) is calling CAT and having them go directly to Claas; which can't get parts for the Ford 6.22L 6-Cyl 380CI naturally aspirated diesel engine,-the 642 has in it. Getting parts thru CAT is quite expensive for me, as I'm at my first year in college. I can't belive CNH doesn't carry Ford 642 combine parts. I would've, at the least, thought that they would've carried books and parts for the engine. At least most of the CNHs in Ohio don't supply anything for the 642s. I need parts for the machine and especially parts for the engine-real bad. If anyone has another/cheaper place to get parts for the Ford 642 combine (machine and engine), PLEASE let me know. I also need an engine repair and engine torque specs manual as well. I am always looking for Ford combines. If anyone is thinking of selling their Ford combine, please contact me. Thanks. binkleys-ford-nut@columbus.rr.com

Hey Jason, I haven"t heard from you in a while!I couldnt help but respond to these posts about the 642.I still have two running 642"s that I use in a small custom harvesting business in middle Georgia. Most parts are avalible from Claas at very reasnoable prices. The catch to it is that without part numbers you will have a hard time getting them.I have a parts book on my machines and all I have to do is call Eaton and son in Blountsville tennessee, give them my numbers and they have them drop shipped from Claas to me.As for the engine,What most people dont realize is that the 380 engine is widely used in the recreational boat world where it is called the lehman 120!Most any major marine shop can supply all parts.Do a search for Lehman parts and you can find them. This is a very reliable and fuel efficient engine.I just cut 100 acres of 40bpa wheat on less than 70 gals of fuel.

Sounds like you know about the 380.... Would you happen to know if there's a kit to convert mine (in the NH 1400)to a spin-on oil filter? No one else I've asked could help me. Thanks.

Fordfarmer, I do not know of a spin on kit, but I can tell you that the canister oil filter is the same as is used on some perkins engines.Overseas the 642 combine is a dominator 85 Claas and they use the Perkins engine. If you could figure out which perkins it is then you can probably find a used outfit off of a massey tractor here in the states.By the way What is a 1400 New holland(combine,Hay swather, etc)? Is your engine a 380 non turbo or the 363 turbo?

I had claas combines once ?
My dominator 80 had perkins 6372 natural,
dominator 85 had perkins 6354 turbo,This one may have had Merc engine originally.
I dont want to see either one ever again.
( I mean the combines not the engines )

Thanks for the info on the oil filters. My 1400 is a Belgium-built combine. 380 c.i./non-turbo (and hydro trans). I bought it in n/w Iowa 2 years ago when my wife and I were visiting her grandmother. It had 1440-some hours on it and a 13' flex head, for $4100 delivered to n/w Wisconsin. Just too small for the farms in that area, I guess.

My father in law has 1 6-30 corn head, 17'grain table, combine, spare diesel engine, and some manuals that he no longer uses. I think they cut 1 up for scrap last year. Everything is located in south west Indiana. I can see if he is interested in selling them. Email me if I need to pursue this for you.

Meant to also add that our local Ford dealer could still get parts for 642's at least as recently as 5 years ago (but it involved a long wait), but he retired 3 years ago and died of cancer last year. I think there's a 642 at Krominga Motors, too (in IA if I rememebr right).

Not Claas, but yes, the older [conventional] New Hollands were European and came from Belgium, not Germany. The conventionals still come from Belgium, while the rotaries are American made.

Old NH's were made by Clayson which Sperry-Rand-New Holland bought up. Before Sperry-Rand sold NH off to Ford.

Clayson was the name used, even at the same time they were called "New Holland" under the S-R name here in North America.

The company was really called Leon Claeys Company. "Clayson" was a colloquialization, maybe just as "Fordson" was to Ford.

New Holland combines first appeared in North America, in 1966.
