Can anybody tell me how many 2588 combines were made. i've seen 100's of 2388's, but never a 2588. However I recently saw a picture of one. I am about to lose an argument so i might as well lose it properly.

We were in NE Kansas for a wedding yesterday and I took a picture of a new 2588 on the lot of KAN Equipment at Wamego,KS.

I dont think that any new ones have been sold in my area.

The 2588's were in production all last year and still are being built today. I would guess there are atleast hunderds if not thousands out there. Basically a hopped up 2388 with more HP, stronger final drives to carry the extended grain tank, faster unload auger and a few more updates. A comment from the salesman at the local dealership says they are still the darling of a lot of custom harvesters as the 2588 will transport on existing trailers and other equipment while the 8010 will not. Also is still a good combine for smaller operations who do not want the size and complication of a 7010-8010.

That sounds a bit reminiscent of the last few 914's and 915's that trickled through while the first rotaries made their debut. There were a lot of mixed farmers praying that IH would continue to make a conventional at that time. In many cases I guess you could say IH's loss was JD's gain. Some of us die hards just found ways to make 1460's suit our needs.

I agree but IMHO the biggest boon to JD was that Allis started putting all their efforts into the N series rotaries and forgot about updating and building a larger conventional combine. At the time the N series came out the Gleaner conventionals were the number one seller in North America. A couple years after the N series came out Deere was number one. It didn't make sense that Gleaner would abandon a number one seller for an unproven machine but that's what happened. Sure the L3 and M3 combines were being sold but they were only a rebadged L2 and M2 which were good but a larger machine was needed with needed updates like a reverser that the N series recieved.
