Ford Plow info needed

In hopes of an early spring, I'm getting the Ford 2-bottom plow that I got last year ready to go. I had the back bottom taken off, but luckily all the bolts were there and she's now a full 2-bottoms long.

I stopped by my ford Dealer to get a couple of new plow points (shares/whatever) and all they had were 16" points - My plow has 14" points.

Can someone out there with such a plow (or something close) measure how long the points are supposed to be and either post here or email me directly?

Oh, the points I bought are "full" or "sod" points, not the shorter ones that are used in corn stubble and such.

Thanks!

Tim

Plow with them! Being a little long is of no consequence most of the time since any extra length just sticks into the previous furrow. The only time its a bother is on the first pass across the patch and then only on the front bottom. Unless the edge sticks out past the top end of the moldboard to hit the fence sooner there should be no problem and the longer share will guarantee the better shearing of alfalfa roots.

Last time I tried to pull 2-12 with an 8N it was too much for the tractor.

Gerald,

Thanks for the info - I'll be pulling the plow with my Massey TO-35 so I'll have more than enough HP. BTW... This plow was designed for the 8N/9N, but when I bought it (with one of my 8N's) the back bottom had been removed (but all the bolts were there).

I suppose in the right soil, an 8N could do the job, but my Massey will do it better (just a bigger tractor) AND the hydraulics work better.

I'm not sure I follow the question exactly. You have a 2-14 Ford plow (2 bottoms, 14" each) and you want plow shares. Your dealer has only shares for 16" plows.

What do you want us to measure?

The 14" can be measured on the frame of your plow, the width of the cut of one bottom. The share itself will be longer since they sit at an angle, and should cut a bit more than the 14". In fact on my JD 4-16 plow I found a 18" share that matched the hole pattern, & it does a good job of cutting off roots & making up errors in my plowing...

Plows from different years or bottom styles can have different bolt patterns, etc. You could use your plow model/serial number to get shares, but I find it easiest to just take an old one off & take it along to the nearest farm supply store & match up one that fits.

If I can help somehow, e-mail or post here. I am used to JD & Oliver plows mostly.

Well, I'm looking for how long the share should be. I can't match it up with the one share I have because that's a different kind of share (a short one for corn stubble) and I need (want) longer shares for plowing sod.

Yes, I can "guess" it and come close by measuring from the landside of the back bottom over, but I figured I'd see if anyone had a 14" sod-type plow share that they could measure.

Ok. Um, you could still take the old one & match up the bolt holes, just looking for a longer share? You will always need to match up the bolt hole pattern, won't you?

Your NH dealer should be able to list out the part numbers of different shares available for you, if indeed different sizes are available. If he can't, look for another NH dealer. You can also go to a farm supply store & look up what is available from their suppliers. 'Weise' (I think that's the spelling?) seems to be the big supplier of plow parts around me to all the farm stores. You will have to be real careful to get the right kind, because different plows might have very different bolt patterns. But don't just go by what is on the shelf, most of the stores have the parts book laying around for you to look up what you need.

I guess I'm just thick headed today, but I'm not sure what good it will do you to know the length of the actual share. I couldn't use that to order the parts I would need, so I'm not sure how it will help you?

Well, I got two shares from the local Ford/New Holland dealer, but their for a 16" wide bottom, not a 14" wide bottom. They fit fine (the holes all line up), but they're too long.

I can't (or don't want) to just cut them off to match my old shares because the old shares are "rock" shares - shorter than "sod" shares. Rock share have kind of a "check mark" cut on the end and sod shares are straight (well, at an angle).

So, what I'm trying to find out is how long a 14" share (sod share) for a ford 2-bottom plow should be. Once I know this, I can cut off my 16" shares to the correct length.

Got it. :) Finally!

I have the wrong color plows, & didn't even know there were longer ones to start with, so like all my messages to you, I'm no help to you. :)

At least I replied to you? Thanks for dealing with me,
