Hi Guys,

This week I'm gonna dive right in the middle of this old baler and tune 'er up for next summer.

I want to check/replace all of the chain rollers and bearings, do some sheet metal doctoring in the chamber and set the static tension on the chain (might have to take out a link). Then, I'll repack the darned wheel bearings.

Any advice before I start so I don't get bloodied up too darned bad? :>)

you sure have atime don't you always tinkering with your stuff, just do it and go on,good thing you don't farm for living. I thought your internet medical stuff was 24/7. Wish I had as much time to redo things as you. Good luck. I have more discovators and planters still coming to assemble. don't have time to get my own stuff back together much

That pickup looks almost identical to my 664. If it is, there will be a bearing, inside a stamped steel flangette, that holds the pick up tooth mounting tube to the pickup frame. You have to remove the tube and then all the teeth to remove the bearing, so if there is any sign of wear, replace them now. Also check the bearings that run in the cam track. Over time the seals on those bearings go and then they have a short life span. Very easy to change while the tooth mounting tube is sitting on the bench. A 3/8" air ratchet sure speeds things up while working on these pickups. I was warned though, don't tighten the self threading bolts on the pick up bands with a air wrench. They strip out very easily. (Also found out to warn the hired help not to use too cmuch force on the ratchet either).

Hope this helps.

John.

Thanks John,

That's good to know; I've got to go in there and replace a few pickup teeth anyway.

Allan:

Make sure you have that chain tied well so that when you take it apart, it can't run over you!
