I am looking at buying an IH model 46 baler to use with my 8n. The asking price on this is 200.00. Does this sound like a good price? Also does anyone have any idea what years this baler was made? I would also appreciate it if anyone has an idea as to were I can get a manual for this baler. thanks

I've had some bad times trying to bale with a 8N and a 66 NH baler the baler weighs 200lb. more. My land is steep and that may have had some thing to do with it. I think I'd look for a baler with it's own engine, you don't have to worry about live pto. Those balers with the engine where built for tractorswithout live pto. Wish someone would have told me years ago, I traded my N for a newer tractor with live pto. I miss it now they are great at pushing snow. Hope this helps Jeff

A few years ago there was a newspaper article about an older farmer who put up his hay with a fairly new engine driven New Holland pulled by a team of horses. He wasn't Amish, but he liked his team. Anyway, he put up a surprising amount of hay every year with that rig.

IowaN I have a 49 8n and bale hay with a IH 46. Works great!! I run in 2nd gear with no problems. My ground is pretty flat and I do not pull a wagon behind to catch the bales. Yes I was able to get a manual from my dealer and the most problem I've had is with the twine knives. They need a sraight edge that is sharp. The new ones are very hard to adjust. I was lucky enough to be able to buy a spare set of great used twine knives for spares. The price sounds good has it been shedded and did work well the last time it was used? Look at the twine knives are the staight across on the edge, is the knotter mechanism clean and shinny free from rust? Does the fly wheel turn freely and does the plunger work well in the baling chamber? The 46 has a built in free wheling clutch in the flywheel so not having live PTO is not a big deal at all. A swinging drawbar is not needed just don't turn your corners on a dime and you will be just fine. I hay 6 acres here in central Iowa. Good luck Dan

I wouldn't give much more than that under any circumstances. A Case IH dealer should be able to get you a manual, which is a very good idea. They should also be able to trace the serial number for it and tell you what year it was made in.

Unless that thing has an engine on it, that 8N is gonna have a time powering it. But if you travel in 1st a lot it may be all right. You are probably going to find yourself wishing that you had a tractor with live PTO. But if you take your time, its doable. You will probably want to get a swinging drawbar.

I never had anything to do with a 46 but I knew a couple guys who had 47's. The one had his like new and babied it, and had no problems. The other guy went to buy a set of needles for his, and was told that would be $500. This was 15 years ago.

On the IHC 46 baler it is to much of a load for your tractor. We used to have one only we had a bale kicker on it.I have a 2N Ford that is the same horsepower and the weight is the same as your 8N. We would never even consider hooking to the Ford, We pulled it with either a late model John Deere B or A. Both weigh a lot more to hold the shake down. They were bad at tying 22 years ago when we sold ours. The slides on the plunger if they are the least bit worn will keep it from tying and to fix that you have to replace the whole plunger. If you do decide to get it or any other baler and I highly emphise this, do not, absoutly under any circumstances hook any thing with a PTO to a swinging drawbar. On that tractor for to run the PTO under a load like that do not use one of the little 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inch PTO adapters they sell now. You will Tear the PTO out of the tractor , If you do try the PTO on any baler be shure to get the orignal type PTO adapter that bolts to the differential housing, and also the V drawbar extension that bolts to the lift arms and the cross drawbar and use stablizer bars to keep fron shaking your tractor apart. Long talk but please take Warning. Leroy
