I've just come into a 150 acre hay field that hasn't been seeded in many years. I hayed the field last year and got probably 1/2 to 3/4 of it for decent hay, the rest was light to moderate weeds. The field is a mix of timothy and treefoil. My question is am I going to have to plow under the field or can I top coat it with seeds and fertilizer.

I agree with everyone else, I've been there, fert. and cutting will kill out the weeds. I'd go wiht 3 or 4 samples in a field that big. I'd like to see a field that big my biggest hay field is about 12 acres. I could set my whole place in your field.

i am going to say what the other 2 people have said. get a soil test and lime/fert as needed. would lie to know what equipment you run? mostly Nh, JD, ??. what tractors? do you buck the bales on a wagon straight from the baler or run a stacker? what kind of sheds do you have?

Ford tractors, NH Baler with kicker, Massey Haybine, Fergison 3pt rake, store the hay up in the loft.

thanks for the help

Most weeds won't come back after they were mowed. Get a soil sample and have it tested. If it needs lime have it applied and then plow. Lime trucks in our area cut ruts real deep. Plowing and reseeding we always did with oats, but the "new seeding" was poor the second year. We never did try overdressing with seed and fertilizer.

See where you are with soil test and how the weeds are. Plow the weedy and overdress the better part,
perhaps a way to split the risk.

Yep ditto on the soil test. I do better to overseed and fertilize while I'm aerating the soil. To keep the weeds out I have found that with frequent mowing I do better than applying herbicides. If I only get 2 cuttings of hay I still mow the grass 3 or 4 times each year. Not only does it keep the weeds out, it also stimulates the grasses into more production and better quality. The mowing is also cheaper than herbicides.
