Can't decide on a specific 2 row planter. I have a ford 8N and deciding between three different planters
1. JD 290 pull type
2. JD 71 unit 3pt
3. Ford 309 3pt

Which is best and why? Should I have fertilizer hoppers or broadcast
Thanks for your answers

JD 71's are hard to beat. JD 70's are a close second. Both easy to operate and set. The 290 is a little more complicated but not bad. One advantage of the 290 is if you want to put down fertilizer when you plant. Personally I go the 71 or 70 route.

I had a Ford 309 2 row. The darn plates were almost as much as the planter. You need different plates, even when you just want to plant a different type of corn. I now have a JD70. I would go with the JD 71. It is still being made by Yetter, plates are cheap and easy to get. I also like the 290, plates are easy to get for them too, and the 290 trailer type units are easy to move around. The 71 is supposed to be the best plate planter. But for 2 row hobby stuff, like me, it probably isn't real critical.

Are you saying I don"t need different plates for different types of corn with a JD 71 planter? What type of corn plates do recommend or stay away from? Thanks

All Deere plate-type planters made since the late 50's (or thereabouts) have used the same style of plates. (And there was only one style prior to this.) Some other brands also used Deere plates. Regardless of what brand of planter it is, you will need different plates for different sizes of seed. (Obviously refering just to plate-type planters here.) For the guy planting hundreds of acres an exact match is important and there are dozens and dozens of plates available, some only very slightly different. But, for casual use on a few acres, it doesn't matter much if the plate isn't a perfect fit to the seed. A half dozen sets should let you plant just about anything you want.
