Recently acquired a set of Cole Mfg Co,(Charlotte, N.C.) planters which attach to an integral 3 point cultivator frame. The planters have right and left compartments with seed plates which rotate in opposite directions. What is the purpose? Was it used to plant two kinds of seed at a time? Would it make sense to use one side for fertilizer? Have several plates, but haven't had time to check them out yet. Any advice would be appreciated

I have this similar cole planter. It is a duplex planter to plant anything you want. DO NOT PUT FERTILIZER IN THIS YOU WILL CORODE IT SEVERLY. NOTE that one side turns counter clockwise and the other clockwise. The seed plates are designed for this. You could put corn into both sides and go a long time without refiling. OR put corn in one side and beans in the other and make one pass over the field. Clean the plates up and look on them and they will tell you what they are for. good luck.

Don't know the model. Didn't know what a duplex planter was until I tried to get plates for it. Company in atlanta has plates, price is about $20 each. You must specify left or right hand turn. They said it is cole "high speed" planter. Sure enough doesn't matter how fast you go, it works fine. Seen several horse drawn types just like mine in front of the feed store. Maybe this was an early spin off for cole for the tractor market. It fits the single point hitch on the Farmalls (140). I will try to find the model number this weekend and the paper work for the plates. MY neighbor has retired and he has about 25 different (left and right) plates. The teeth spacing is proportional to the space between the planted seeds. Some plates have only 2 teeth. Others look like saw blades (lots of teeth).

its supposed to snow here tonight and tomorrow. Pretty weird for GA.

It's cold in Texas too.
Yeah my watermelon plates have 2 notches and the pea plates have 14. There's alot of difference.

I have'nt seen it all, but I never saw a Cole that turned plates opposite to each other. The Cole has fertilize hoppers that turn backwards to the seed plates, but they're in a separate hopper box.. What series number is it?
I have some Cole books here, we can see what it is supposed to do.
My Cole planters have a galvanized partition in the seed boxes that make it look somewhat like a dual compartment, but what that does is make the seed flow into the bottom of the plates then spin to the top for distribution.
The fertilizer hoppers should be directly behind the seed hoppers I think. All I've seen are.

I have a Burch planter with dual seed boxs on it. Folks used to plant velvet beans in with their corn years ago. That is one application that I know of.
