I am thinking of up grading balers and if I trade will get one with net wrap. What is cost of the net wrap per bale? How many bales can you get per roll of wrap? I have heard 1.5-2.2 wraps per bale, what do most people use?

Here in NE Iowa we charge $8 per bale with net or twine. Our Net costs are $1.35 per bale versus twine at about $.70. We are more competitive since we buy net direct from the distributor for $175 a roll delivered to our door in pallet lots. It costs $240 a roll if I pick it up from a Deere dealer or $210 from our Vermeer dealer. Net definitely has the advantage on bales per hour, 45-50 versus 25-30. We average about 125 bales of Hay per roll and 95 cornstalks where we use 3-4 wraps.

John, I was talking to my baler man yesterday afternoon on this subject. He just traded for a pretty new New Holland (had maybe 1000 rolls run through it. Cost him somewhere between 22k to 25k.
A roll of netwrap is around $280. To make a bale last 2 yrs. One would need 3 wraps exactly, or the bale will rot and fall to pieces. If you only wrap 1.5 to 2 wraps there will be thin ares where there is only 1 or 2 layers of wrap where the bale sets on the ground. Thus letting it rot too easly. And not holding the bale together when you need to move it, so it can be fed.
He is figureing about 70 to 80 bales to the roll.
His price this year on cut and bale $20. with net wrap $24/bale

John, your baler man is ripping you off. The cost for him to use net wrap is probably a little bit cheaper than twine, when you consider the time savings, and less wear and tear on the baler. He should charge the same: net wrap or twine. Around here in North Central Texas, they charge $16 to $18 for cut, rake, bale with choice of wrap. Tom

Tom,you say netwrap baling charge should be same as or cheaper than twine because of time related savings. Is this also going to cover the cost of the netwrap attachment costing $5000-$6000 ???? Tx Jim

Tom I hear you, BUT, not here, Balers are scareser than Hens teeth. it is what it is. We have about 3 custom guys in a 25 mi radious. This guy is close, and does one heck of a job baleing, his bales will go in excess of 1700lbs. so lb/bale are excelent. and this guy is only 4 miles from me!
Last yr the rate was 17 and 19 for string/net.
I have put a pencil to it and the new prices are in line with with inputs I see. I guess balers are more plentiful in your area so compitition drives the price down.

John, I realize the prices vary based on loaction. My mian point was that he should charge the SAME or LESS for the net wrap. He is using his machine less, less wear, less maintenance, less time, less labor and charging MORE for net wrap. Sounds like in your market you will just have to accept it. Tom

Tom, What i am not understanding from ya'll is this. With all things equal till the point of binding the bale up with string. Net-Wrap IS a premium product. it keeps that bale in a more useable condition longer than string, it cost more than string, doesn't go as far (# of bales), So how can it be that it should be the same price as string?this Isn't all that complicated to me, the price difference is simply the cost of the wrap over that of string. Plus your hay will stay in better condition longer.
What am I missing?

Tom is right on this one. It's all about time. Look at it another way. You're paying 20 bucks a bale to have the hay made. The baler is pumping out 30 bales an hour. That's 600 bucks an hour. Forget about the mowing, raking time etc. It's 600 an hour. Now, with net wrap, he's pushing another 20 bales an hour. I'd say that's possible, depending on the baler and the twine system. So, all of a sudden the baler man is bringing in another 400 bucks an hour. He can pay the extra cost of the net wrap out of that 400, and still take a darn good chunk of it home for himself. I call that free money.... Best part is, the machine didn't work any harder at all, and the man got home sooner. No need to charge more for net wrap.

John, Twine wrapping takes many rounds of turning the completed, heavy bale in the baler. This takes TIME, WEAR and TEAR, Time is money to a custom baler man.
With net wrap, the completed bale has to only be turned 2 or 3 times in the baler. Less TIME, less WEAR less TEAR on machine.
Therefore, time, wear, tear, maintenance savings when using net wrap offsets the extra cost of net wrap over the cost of twine.
I don't know how to explain it any simpler than this. Tom

I may be out of the loop here but are you paying $20 per bale to have your hay mowed and baled.

At that price I would think that net would be included.

Around here $15 would be high.

Maybe your an out of the way customer or something like that or real low yields so mowing per bale adds up to more per bale.

Maybe were just to cheap here in Iowa.

Gary

I've seen alot of new/used balers out there, by that i mean 200 bales. all of them seem to be the tail gate wrap, if I where to get one it would be a New Holland, they load the wrap up in the front. Find a good dealership that will answer all the questions that you have. thats my two cents worth.

We hire our baling done so I can't comment on what the net wrap itself cost but most people say it's actually cheaper than twine because it's so much faster.

I think I've heard the figure$1.50 per bale, but I don't have one. A word of caution; BIL who is 85 years old recently got a Class baler with net wrap and can't load the net wrap in the baler by himself. A roll of net wrap is heavy, don't have details. You may want to check the loading procedure for the ones you look at.

Netwrap takes about 8 seconds, while double twine arms take about 35 seconds. Netwrap costs about $1.20 more per bale than twin. A roll of net weighs about 80 lbs. and is slighly difficult to load. This is for 4 ft wide baler I ran. Netwrap is unforgiving as if one makes a bale less than perfect it shows from a distance. Tx Jim
