Hi All,

What do you guys use to get cheat grass out of an established alfalfa field? Disc? Spring Tooth?

Thanks,

Allan

You definitely cannot get rid of grass in a established stand of alfalfa by running a drag or disc across it -- geeeez.

I use Poast or Poast Plus on grasses, has to be sprayed while the grasses are under 6 inches and need additional applications through out the growing season, it is best on young newly established grasses, once you get a lot of tillering going on you keep having grasses sprout from the rhizomes. I often spray poast in combination with pursuit or raptor.

With palatable grasses like orchardgrass it may not be economical to spray but if you have something invasive like cheat then you may get some benefit, you may in that case consider the round up ready variety if you want to bend your wallet a bunch.

Huh?

Farmers have been draggin' aging alfalfa fields since they invented the tractor. :>)

just because they are doing it does not mean it works, must be a Nebraska thing.

Ok maybe it works, but I have never heard of anybody doing something like that, don't you trash your alfalfa? And besides, tillage does not even kill all the roots, at least in my part of the country.

Hi Ray,

It's called "rejuvenation" and I really doubt that it is a "Nebraska thing". It is just a "pre chemical era" method is all.

I usually only do it once at about the fourth or fifth year of an aging crop. Have to do it early in the spring and not go very deep and not go very fast.

You'd swear that the whole darned alfalfa crop was ruined, but the alfalfa immediately comes back with a vengeance and just boils up outta the ground with renewed vigor.

Only this time, it comes back clean without all the weeds and grasses.

Allan

We used the spring tooth twice at 90 deg. angles & then followed up with a steel roller to pack the soil back down.

Yeah,

Come to think of it, I remember someone saying that the Calvery hauled it in here back in the 30s or 40s in their horse hay.

Nasty stuff not good for anything except sheep feed and ruining a good hay crop.
