Rotavator Driveshaft

Just picked up an old Howard Rotavator that appears to be made to mount directly to the pto of an 8N tractor. Price was right, free to a good home. Only part missing is the shaft that goes between the PTO and the gear box. Looks like a three-toothed dog clutch in there that would ratchet in one direction. Leads me to believe the shaft might have been spring-loaded. The machine number appears to be D10880 and it's about 48" wide with a single tire and depth adjuster.

My 8N has a sherman over-under and I know the transmission also changes the PTO speed, but I don't need to run 6" deep and 12-MPH. For a small garden plot, I'd like to see if it's worth getting this little tiller working. A plow and disc would be overkill for what I want to do. Anybody have a drive shaft for one of these?

8nva, here is what the front of my Howard Model E-60 looks like. Sounds like you are missing quitw a few parts for that one. Howard is still in production and have distributors out there. Just do a search on Google for Howard.

Hope these pictures help you also I have indicated where the ID tag is located.

If I can help further email me

A good driveline shop can build you a new shaft or a good ag supply store may have the components so that you can build a shaft. Sounds to me you are describing an over running clutch which you will need because of the momentuim of the machine when you stop. Questions?

You said the Rotavator mounts directly to the PTO so the shaft is internal? If that is the case, there is no room for a normal overrunning clutch, so it would have to be built into the way the shaft connects. You could attempt to make a shaft but you should have at least a picture or a parts diagram to go by. If your PTO shaft is the old 1-1/8. You could probably start with an 1-1/8 to 1-3/8 adapter and make a piece to weld on the end that will mate with the 3-headed ratchet-thing, but you will have to get the length right and make positively sure the overrunning feature will still work. Check and see if the Ratchet in the tiller is spring-loaded. Maybe use a lump of clay to make an imprint of the 3-headed part and take it to a machine shop?

You can get 1-1/8 6 B yokes for the tractor. Also remember if you faricate a shaft you need to have 3-4 inches of slip built into it for sure.
