Mornin' All,

Have a few weeks 'til hay harvest. Am toying with the notion of putting all new guards and a new sickel in my NH 495 "just because".

Anybody have an idea of what something like that would cost?

Thanks,

Allan

Kinda depends what you're doin' You can crip must anything through the first cutting of alalfa, then put in new sickles when you get into grass later on. No sense wearing out a new sickle in the dirt. (or don't you have gophers up there?)

Howard,

The darned thing was cutting like a knife thru butter last year in the grass hay.

You know darned well your opinion carries a heck of a lot of weight with me. Are you telling me not to mess with it until it starts giving problems?

I just thought since it was an old used machine that it wouldn't hurt for it to have new parts. I sure don't know anything 'bout 'em.

I've also got an old NH 490 that I'm gonna oil up the chains and give 'er a spin just to see if I've got a "standby" machine. From what I experienced last year, seems like the darned New Hollands are just about bullet proof, no matter how old they are.

Allan, I would do lke Rick says and get a bolt type sickle. Makes knife replacement much easier. I would check the sickle and guards before replacing, they may be in good shape. The sickle wears oun on the bottom. If the sickle bar is worn rounded over it won't fit in the slot in the guards tightly and a loose sickle won't cut as well. You can check the ledgers on the guards to see if they are dull, if they are sharp and not bent up or down there is no need to replace them. I always had trouble breaking or bending guards by hitting rocks, you should have no problems out there in the sand country.
Oh, another benefit of getting a new sickle is getting the new end with bushing, assuming that 12 footer is hooked up to the wobble box the way it was on a 469. Most of my breakdowns were caused by the bushing wearing out. No fun since you have to take the sickle out to replace the bushing. Have fun.

No but I do know I would convert it to the bolt style period if I still had to run a sickle unit. I run disc unit an just mow period. Way less problems and no bunching on unit that has roll narrower than the sickle is. They hate anything damp seem to me like. Good Luck If yu don't like break downs then you better get rid of all your toys because anything mechanical will do it whether it is brand new or old stuff like yours.

I usually deal with Shoup, very good service and fair pricing. The guards are around $9 each and a 12 ft sickle is $145.

Mornin Allan

I like to put a new sickel in about every other year.

Guards seem to outlast about 4 sickels.

Not many rocks here though.

But mines only a 9' 492 NH.

Cost can't remember.

Got to go, daylite and I have beans to spray.

Gary

I don't know what it'd cost, but as soon as you're finished you just run on down and do mine as well would you?

Hi Dave,

I just cannot stand "breakin' down". It absolutely sends me into a tailspin and totally ruins my day/life.

So, I try to "catch" and/or fix everything ahead of time. :>)

Well you'd throwed up you hands and move to the city if you would have been here yesterday.

Planted some Sorgum/Sudan hybird on a small patch. On the way home from services I found a trailer for sale that I have been looking for for two years now and it was in my price range. So I was a tad delayed getting home to start. Every thing was checked out and set up the night before. Got loaded up and in the field about 4:00. In my first 100' the tractor died. Batt flat, no lights, no gages, no start, nothing. Think a cell broke / opened up, she had just started fine not 30 mins earlier. Went pulled batt outta truck and started tractor. First 100' looked good, make four passes, and think I give it another look. Seed in bin doesn't look right. Sure enough, I find a split shaft on the drive for the drill. 2 of 16 drops actually dropping seed. Fetch truck (take bat of of tractor) and go get welder. Pull shaft part way and spend an hour welding and grinding shaft. Can't find seed on any previous passes. Start over. Bout half way through the tractor dies again. Turns over good just no run. Check it over everthing seems right. Try again and starts right up. (shaking head) Does this twice more. (getting old) Pushing 7:00 only half done. Made two more rounds and she died again. This time no re-start. Called son and told to bring another tractor. While waiting figured out the fuel pump is bad. Got it to go long enough to get it out of the way. Hook up second tractor finished planting. What should have taken mabey 2, 2 1/2 hours took a little more than 6. Get home little after 10 and still have to feed 15 bottle calfs.

I hear you loud and clear there. On my mower I can actually carry a spair set (It has 2) of sickles on the machine. When one breaks a section I just pull the whole sickle. One bolt and slide it out, then slide in a new one. I then rebuild it when I get a chance. I put new sections on all 4 sickles every spring.
