Hi Guys,

Just ordered parts for a total cutter head rebuild on my old 12' swather.

$506 to new it up clear down to and including the bolts. Okay now, I don't want any downtime, ya hear? :>(

Allan,

Now you have a spare sickle. Sharpen her up and hope you don't have to use it.

Does that cutter have chains? If so I would check condition of chain and get repair links. Check condition of idler pulley and maybe get a spare.

It probably will work OK. You don't have rocks and tree stumps to give trouble.

Hi Ol' Pard,

Yeah, lots of chains; gotta get after them too.

Just now finished putting in that left suspension spring down underneath that heavy bear. Whew! What a job, but now the head "floats" like it should.

Naw, the only thing I have out here to dampen my day is a mole hill once in awhile. I cut 15 acres with it last summer and it never missed a beat, but I could sure tell it needed attention at the sickel area. Just wasn't a clean, snappy cut like I'm used to.

What kind of a mower do you use?

Allan,

I used a NH 469 for many years. Good machine, NH usually has good engineering of its products. I now use a 3ph disc mower. It will cut as fast as I can sit on the tractor, assuming I have enough HP. Disc mower takes more HP than sickle mower. I could pull the 469 with 35 HP. I miss the conditioner and have to avoid stemmy crops that are hard to dry, but use a hay tedder. I understand you need to condition alfalfa(I don't grow alfalfa) so I don't recommend that you get a disc mower and a disc moco is VERY expensive to buy and repair. I think a 12 foot disc moco would be a load for the 966. For what you are doing the NH is about as good as it gets.

I assume you know to check the alignment of the new guards before you put the blade in.

Allan:

Where did you get your parts for the 495 cutter bar?

I just put all new guards, hold downs, bolts, nuts, and cutterbar on my 495. I used NH parts.

Hi Jim,

I got 'em from Sickle Service in Grand Island. They told me they get the stuff from the same supplier that New Holland uses (used).

He swears it is good quality goods; only problem was that UPS won't ship a sickle over 9 feet, so had to use a trucking outfit.

Did I get charged too much or too little?

Your price is good. Did that include the trucking for the sickle?

Yes,

They tell you that the trucking is free. We all know how that works, tho. :>)

I'll hook in the link.
