Hey You Guys,

Have been watchin' some of my neighbors this haying season.

Have spotted one of those "Left hand, Right hand" New Holland V-rake setups. I think the rakes are a 454 and a 455 with the trailering hitch?

They look to me like a heck of a nice old outfit. What would a guy have to give for one of these setups anyway?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan,

You should try a finger wheel v rake. Easy on the hay at fast raking speeds and relativally inexpensive with no drive train to wear out.

I actually like the idea better of two rakes that are the sam - one pulled behind the other one -

the big reason is because if the material is light you can rake two rake widths or 4 rake widths - the nturn around and put 2 more rake widths or 4 more rake widths on the same windrow - try that with a left and a right.....

and if it heavy u could still just keep putting 2 rake widths pe rwindrow

Well heck,

That isn't a bad idea, I guess. I'm just trying to cut the raking time in half.

With your idea, I could just buy only one more rake, make some sort of a hitch and go.

Thanks,

Allan

That one looks different, the double hitches here usually have a hydrualicly steered dolly wheel on the rear rake so you can swing it on the go.

Most are giving up the old double hitch rollabars and buying rotary rakes though. Those big double rotor ones will sweep up a pile of hay in a hurry.

Here is my set up, like you were talking about. It works well, but it would also work with a left and a right rake in it too.

With a left and a right hand rake you can rake four windrows together in one pass if you can switch the rakes from one side to the other. On the first pass use it to throw two windrows away from each other then on the second pass with the rakes switched around you can throw two together but those two will already have two more thrown on top of them from the first pass.

We got a JD 700 twin rake this year which is the same as a Vermeer R-23 and it does a good job, we have about $4,500 in it after completely rebuilding it so it should go along time without needing any work.
