Can anyone provide any estimate on what price range these planters sell for? Can you get parts easily for them? Can these be converted to a 3 pt. implement? Thanks, Tim

Look around some! I found a complete, fully functional 3point JD two row planter at an auction for $7. Plants great and WELL worth the money I paid!

I recently bought a 290 that I'm thinking about selling for parts.
Got to go pick it up one of these days.

My dad purchased one about 5 years back at auction for $125 and that was with good fertilizer boxes, good seed boxes, and a working hydraulic ram. I would guess at auction today with farmette's driving up the price of small implements...you are gonna be in the $350 to $400 range here in the upper midwest.

It really is a nice dependable piece of equipment though. Not a bad choice if all you need is a two row planter.

There's almost nothing that can't be converted to three point attachment, but with a good hydraulic lift you still have the hydraulic advantage with the weight distribution being better with the implement tires bearing the load of the planter. Not to mention less compaction with the rear tires of the tractor if you did convert it to a three point.

The JD parts network is pretty good about knowing where to find parts, plus with a lot of 290's having been made...good used parts shouldn't be tough to track down either.

Good luck!

Billy

I have 4 to make into 3 good ones for resale. I paid as low a $5 for one but when rebuilt will be in $5-6 Hundred range and plan to take to Amich area. Saw one that was converted several year ago and looked clumsly. The extra weight with a conversion over a standard 3 point planter would make it too much of a load for any small Ford or Ferguson, trouble lifting and if you got it lifted would have trouble keeping front end on ground.

Thanks for your help. There is a good picture in the implement photos of a restored #290. I can't find an online parts manual so I won't know if the planter I am looking at has all of the parts. The owner's wife is selling it and I don't believe she knows if it even works. If I can buy it cheap enough, and it appears to be relatively complete, I will take a chance on being able to get any of the missing parts. I see manuals are available on EBAY. ---Tim

You can probably convert any implement to 3 pt. But I found that if you have the fertilizer units on any of these planters, it gets kind of heavy. The small 2 row trailer units are easy to push around, and are easy to take care of. IHMO.

Price will depend on condition and how proud the owner is of the unit. I've seen them range from $50 to over $500. If you have a GOOD JD dealer he can still find most parts for you, altho it may take a little research. I needed some parts to make my fertilizer attachment functional and was able to get NOS parts for it at a very reasonable price. What my dealer did was search John Deeres dealer computer base and find out what dealers had the parts. You may have to order them from different dealers across the country but they're still out there. One part that I know is NOT available thru the dealer any more is the fertilizer drop tube...the corrugated metal one. They're good little planters and do a great job still.

I just typed in "JD #290 corn planter" in the 'Search' box above and got 129 hits. Might be worth reading. Don't know about the price/parts.
