Am I reading it right that you provided all of the equipment and he just provided labor, fuel, and twine? If so, none of the custom rates from the extension would work b/c they all figure using their own equipment. Maybe cut that rate in half?? That's a tough one, doing it like Old says on shares is probably the easiest, but if he used your equipment, I would think maybe a 50/50 or even a 1/3 2/3 the other way with you getting 2/3 would be closer.

TRY THIS WEBSITE FROM OHIO STATE--PRICES MAY VERY IN YOUR AREA.

Link

My son just did some for $0.85 per bale, dropped on the ground. That includes mower/conditioner, tedding & raking. Not worth it, as fields turned out to be more like a jungle.

One thing to note is that some people won"t bale pasture, too many field hazards. And I"m one of those.

neighbor has thrower on baler so bales are on wagon . i will put them in barn . a dollar a bale has been suggeted by local farm accountant . hay made on shares locally is 50 - 50 . that comes comes out to about a dollar a bale for this time of year locally .

I think the fairest way to charge is on a per bale basis. I like TimS's figure of $1.00-$1.25 per bale. However, it would depend on where you are located. In a normal year(not this year), square bales of first crop only sell for about a $1.50-$2.00 per bale in our area. Also you didn't specify if the neighbor would be delivering the hay to your barn and stacking the bales (alot of work). I would have to add extra per bale for that versus just dropping them in the field for you to take care of.

I had my hay put up and the charges were $20/acre for mowing/conditioning, $5/acre for raking and $10 a bale for large round bales that averaged 1320 pounds.

Common thing in my area is for the guy that owns the land he gets 1/3 of the bales and the guy baleing it gets 2/3s of the hay. Of course it changes if the land owner does things like cut and or rake but thats going rate in this area

Who gathered and hauled the hay ?

I would think at least $.75 to $1.00 per bale.

I'd charge at least $1.10 per bale and want the entire years custom work. Price per bale goes up with each cutting since you do the same amount of work for decreasing bales.

I am leaning to charge by the hour for custom work, but have not yet formulated pricing.

Around here custom square baling is $1 - $1.25 a bale for cut/rake/bale.

You can contact your local ag extension agent and they should have pricing sheets you can get, I got them for our part of Missouri.

You will need to adjust for rising cost of twine and fuel of course.

Some folks charge per acre for mowing, mowing/conditioning, raking. Then a fee per bale on top of that.

I went a long time ago to charging by the hour for everything but baling..

I was tired of seeing the guy with the smooth field pay more than the guy that made me run ruts and stumps and around trees...

I think I am really fair with $30/hr for disc mower..
