Ford vs. New Idea hay rake

I am looking at two old three point hitch hay rakes and trying to decide which one to buy. They are priced very close. They are both what looks to be out of the 60's or somewhere in that era. The Ford has two belts, one of which pulls an extra "beater mechanism" or something which seems to be there to keep hay forced back into the rotating teeth. The New Idea is simpler with one belt in a straight line, maybe built a little stronger. I do want a 3 point hitch type because of my steep slopes and lots of short turns. Which one would bve the best rake. Thanks.

I have the New Idea 3 point and after reading Burr's post, would probably get the Ford if your talking same price range. bought a New Idea because it was cheep and needed only a small amount of repair. If the belt shield is not on make sure you have one on before you go to the field or you will be teaching horse trainers how to swear. When you straddle a winrow it acts as a pickup attachment.

I never used the New Idea, but that Ford is a pretty good set up. You're right that beater keeps it from balling and wadding and from clogging up in very heavy grass. If you get the Ford it will be well worth the 30 bucks to get an operaters manual from Ford New Holland.
The ones I had were real good and they had 2 inflatable tires on the rear to keep it from bottoming out in ditches or rough spots.
Like I said I never used a New Idea, but it would have to be very very good to beat the Ford.
