I have just got a Northern Tools catalogue today and it is advertising a Middle Buster for a compact tractor.
What is a middle buster for? this is the first time i have seen one in the UK. Is it a subsoiler or a potato ridger or a cultivator? it seems to have a very narrow working width, so i can`t make my mind up whether it would be a useful thing to have about or not very useful at all?

Thanks
Burt UK

In addition to what the others have written here, I noticed that tandem disc parts catalogs list an optional "middle buster" that was actually a small cultivator shank and shovel that fastened between the front disc gangs to break the ridge that is always left between those gangs.

Around NE Kansas, they were called listers and first came into being pulled behind 3 horses. They had a corn planter onbehind the moldboard and seeing one in that configuration today is extreamly rare. I have never seen one set up so, but my dad used his like that for many years, but he dont know what happened to the planter part. Probably took it off when he went to rideing planter as that would make it lighter to manuver when planting or digging potatoes. He got rid of alot of grandpas machinery in the late 50s. took off the bolts and nuts and saved them and junked the rest at the junkyard, and I imagine that went along with it. Still has the lister

Middle busters(bedders) were used to make rows/beds in the field. They were usually 36/38" wide center to center. Corn, cotton, etc was planted on top of row. When plants got big, you would plow throwing dirt around plant base to cover up grass and weeds. Being on top of row allowed water to run off when it rained. They also could be used in many different projects.

A middle buster is a single bladed plow that throws dirt both ways, leaving a trench between two piles (rows) of dirt. I use one for cutting a trench in sod in preparation for planting small pine trees. This moves the sod away form the row, giving the tree a little headstart. Also used it to make a nice uniform trench for planting potatoes in garden this spring. Neighbor borrowed mine for trenching between his buildings for burried wire - made several passes to get it deeper. In short any use here a trench is needed.

Yep,

Like Cowman says, they bust out the row centers in row crops. Main use is to knock out those wheel tracks.

In flood irrigated crops, if this is not done, the water will not penetrate; just run down to the end of the field because of the compaction.

They are used in cultivation to bust out the middle of the row. Subsequent passes mound the dirt up along the row.

I bought one this year to plow my potatoes. Worked good I was in a hurry this year and it cut at least 3 hours off the time it normally took me to dig the rows by hand and I was lot less tired and dirty. I'm not sure what else you can use them for. Maybe make a small trench or something?

In addition to what cowman said, you can use them to lay off rows and plant in the bottom of the furrow to conserve moisture and make a ridge of dirt availiable in the middle of the row so later plowing can pile dirt against the plant and cover up weeds in the row. Also we piled dirt against corn plants to keep the corn from developing suckers. I know present hybrid field corn is not cultivated this way. I'm not in an irrigated area either so I can't comment on irrigation practices.
