I have a 1950 8n and have been reading about roll overs and the need for roll over protection. Can anyone tell me where I can find a ROPS for my tractor, how to make one and install it, and how it can be incorporated into a cab.

Thanks for all your input. While I'm thinking about which solution I'll choose, I'm driving with more care and just a bit slower.

Hercules Home. That's what they call their website. ROPS for just about anything. Check them out.

Homestead Tractor (hstractor-dot-com)is a distributor for Hercules ROPS and they make them for the n. They are made in Australia, as I believe are the Bareco ROPS. They do come with a seatbelt system and supposedly meet OSHA requirements.

I was looking at them for my Ford 3000, but have not bought any yet. Cannot say if they are well constructed or if the n's axle will be an issue. Do seem to be reasonably priced.

Remember if you are going to rely on a ROPS to protect you in a rollover, you need a seat belt. Look at a newer tractor to see how it is anchored. If all is not right the rollbar is just something else to pin you in a rollover.

If I were going to build one, I would copy the ROPS design used in cabs like Cozy Cab, Hiniker, Year-Round. Not a simple inverted U design bolted to the axle. Four post frame to the axle and forward housings, made out of 2x3 or 2x4 RT quarter wall, closed gussets in all corners,- sun shade cover. Hang the radio under the roof and boogie down the road.

I agree that to make a 4 poster like you describe would be ideal.
Trouble with the N series is Ford didn't give you a bolt hole anywhere along the sides. Nothing!
Not till the NAA/Jubilee came along did they give you something on the tranny.

Two ideas there- would it be possible to run a 2x4 tube from under the rear axle, forward to the front of the engine, using the holes the front loader mounts go on? Then mid-mount outriggers to support the front corners. Or a clamp assembly mid-mount around the tranny? If my backhoe were home I could check, but #3 son has it now.

Alan: Buying a ROPS for an 8N in 2007 would be impossible. No one will accept the liability. You can build a device, however it will not be a ROPS. If the cage and cab you install don't withstand the tractors weight, then you are much better off with nothing on there. There is a 90% chance you can jump clear on an open tractor, it will be 0% with a cab.

If ROPS cab is important, you best sell the 8N, take a little jaunt to the nearest farm equipment dealer and be prepared to shell out $35,000. If your not a farm tractor operator with smarts, that is exactly what safety costs.

The best ROPS is between your own ears. Designing, building and installing ROPS will likely come from the same place, as others don't want to assume the liability. But and 8n Ford? Unless you live in the mountains or like to hook on to stumps and try and pull them, an 8n ford would be a tractor that wouldn't tip easily.

But many an 8N has flipped over the rear axle from an improper hitch. I saw one that flipped while hitched to a wheeled dirt bucket. I don't know what was wrong with that hitch but it killed the operator.

One problem with 8N and ROPS is that the axle housings may not be strong enough to support the inverted tractor with the ROPS simply bolted or clamped to those axle housing. It might need to brace the axles and be attached to the differential housing and the engine too.
