I"ve got a ford baler that keeps wearing out the splined hub that the flywheel mounts on. The internal splines just strip out. I"ve went through three of these hubs in the last 10,000 bales, wonder if it could be pto shaft wobble? thanks

That was a weak point when they were new. I know it a little cocky but, if all possible trade balers been there.

Thanks. I welded a new yoke on the shaft several years ago. I should have taken it to a machine shop. but I had hay to bale. I'll bet I need a new shaft

If you welded the yolk on, a cutting wheel will cut it off. I'd start there. Compare that shaft with some other shafts you have around. Look at the alignment of the yolks on each end of the shaft. I should check this before I say this, but I think if you take the yolk on the tube, and the yolk on the bar, you should be able to draw a straight line through the cross caps on each end. They should be in perfect alignment. If I'm wrong on that, they should be at 90 degrees to each other.... but I'm pretty sure it's in a perfect line. They certainly shouldn't be out by 5 or 10 or 20 degrees. They need to line up to cancel each other out.
I wouldn't buy a new shaft right away anyhow. Check this one, and if necessary, try fixing it first. It's not as bad as it sounds.

It could be a bad PTO shaft. It could be a lot of things. Have you changed the gearbox shaft? Were those splines bad? Is the hub loose on the gearbox shaft? Beyond that my first guess I think would be a PTO shaft that won't scope, followed by a shaft that had been bent, welded or otherwise unbalanced or have it's U-Joints out of phase. Having a shaft out of phase will cause the shaft to "pulse" and could place unnatural strains on the hub. It will also cause frequent "cross" (u-joint) failures. Other alignment issues could also contribute. If the cause doesn't surface fairly soon, then you'd be money ahead to find another baler, as the 532 isn't a canidate to spend money on considering all the parts you can't get for them now..... I've got one. I know. I do like the baler though.
