Changing plates on sickle bar mower

I have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower. I purchased a new complete bar with new serrated sections and now I'm replacing the plates(?) on the rock guards that they slide upon. What is the easiest way to remove the old ones. They are attached by a rivet. Is it best to drill them out, pound them out????? Any advice on making this easier would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sid is correct on how to replace a section on the sickle bar itself.

To replace a ledger plate on a guard, remove the guard, grind the head off the back (bottom side)on your wheel. Lay the guard bottom up with the ledger plate flat on an anvil and the rivewt head centered over a hole in the tail of the anvil. Use a drift punch to drive the old rivet out.

The new rivet should have a countersunk head on it so it fits flush in the ledger plate allowing the section to slide back and forth over it smoothly.

CRS strikes, but Memory returns! Dad had a cast block that was design to hold a guard just right so the rivet could be driven out, freeing the ledger plate.

Central Tractor and others still sell tools like that. If you were gonna redo a whole sickle bar at one session it might be worth it to get one.

Take the sickle and lay it on the edge of an anvil or like object so that the wide end of the section is sticking up,the sickle will be horizontal with the anvil, and drive the sections out with a hammer. To reinstall a section, lay the sickle flat on the anvil and pound the rivets down so the section fits tightly.
